Sessions for Success!
“Can you land the sale?”
A concept project for personal trainers to book complimentary success sessions which will lead to more profitable personal training sales.
Audience: Personal Trainers
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, Storybording, Action Mapping, Script Writing, Animation
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline, Vyond, MindMeister, Figma, Google Docs, Powerpoint, Canva
Overview
Process
Action Map
Text-based Storyboard
Visual Mockups
Note: The SME requested the use of animated video to be used throughout the project (Vyond.) The hope was that the training appealed to a younger audience (since personal trainers are historically a younger group) and that it didn’t feel too overwhelming as the personal trainers completed their training.
Full Development
A current Personal Training Manager at a local gym contacted me to create a prototype for his Personal Training staff. He did not want the name of his current gym to be used. Instead, we used the fictitious gym Fit Time Worldwide to create the project.
After talking with the PTM, we came to the conclusion that the problem was staff not following through the whole sign-up process which fell short at scheduling complimentary success sessions with new members. This problem has led to a decline in personal training revenue for both the company and the personal trainers.
Throughout our conversation, we discussed potential problem solving solutions and landed on a scenario-based eLearning training. This learning tool guides the personal trainer through a scenario where they help facilitate the correct way to lead a member through the sign-up process all the way through scheduling the complimentary success session.
After evaluating the problem, I pinpointed the areas that were appropriate to address with scenario-based eLearning. I developed an action map, and created a text-based storyboard with a complete script. After the first round of feedback, making adjustments, and receiving approval from the SME, I created visual mockups, a visual storyboard, and a functional prototype. After another review cycle, I made the final product you see here.
While working with the SME, I created an action map highlighting the high-priority actions needed to achieve the goal. These actions were discussed with the SME to make sure that the proper behaviors of the personal trainers performing the correct actions in sequential order would lead to the solution.
After creating the action map with clear actions, choices, and consequences, I wrote the text-based storyboard. This document served as the blueprint for the project. It included all text and dialogue for the project, a mentor character where users can receive helpful on-demand information through the course, as well as visual and programming notes in detail. This allows the client to see word for word what is included in the project. Once reviewed, revised, and agreed upon from the client, I continued the process by creating the visuals.
After creating the text-based storyboard, I began pulling together inspiration from photos, fonts, and potential styles. I used Figma to organize the collected data and began to create the consistent style, theme, and feel for the entire project. The visual mockup included the layout of each slide using wireframes and full mockups, color selection for the consistent style, character selection, button states, etc.
Interactive Prototype
Once the visual mockups were approved by the client, I began to build an interactive prototype for the client to see its functionality. After creating videos in Vyond, I built the interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline. This gave the client the ability to view the project with interactive and scenario-based slides from the beginning of the project through the first question and its consequences. After a round of review, revisions, and approval from the client, I moved into the full development phase of the project.
Full development included taking the previous interactive prototype (with revisions) and developing the full deliverable. It was mostly a matter of taking all of the previous information and revisions and creating the project with its particular specifications. It was very easy to execute since the revisions happened in steps from the beginning. Once the deliverable was completed, the client did one more review cycle and approved the project.
Results and Takeaways
After working to create this project, the client took it to his team and had them complete the training. After completion, the team and the client gave feedback.
“This training was very well put together. It definitely helped bridge the learning gap in a safe environment before stepping out on the floor to interact with real clients.” - Anonymous User
“I liked how it had videos that showed what was happening instead of a lot of trainings where it’s just reading and lecture.” - Anonymous User
“The training that we created did exactly what I was looking for. Now I’m hoping to get our gym to commission Patrick to create one like it for our company.” - SME/Client
I love learning new things as I’m working with SME’s. Throughout this process, I learned a lot about the gym setting and gym operations that I did not previously know. This project was a lot of fun to create.
